Storyblue: Rich text export coming soon!

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Per the title, I’m coding away at Storyblue rich text export, one of the main requested features for Storyblue (and rightly so!).

I’m smack-dab in the middle of a consulting gig, so my time to work on Storyblue is limited, but I wanted to give you guys an update on where it’s at :).

Still have some spiffy novel design features puttering along in the background, but I’m going to try to kick the RTF export out as soon as it’s done, without waiting for the others.

Thanks for hanging in there, everybody!

Storyblue v1.1.2 Released

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Hi all,

I’ve just uploaded the latest Storyblue version, 1.1.2, with some minor fixes/enhancements. You can download it or upgrade from here.

Changes:

  • FIXED: If you re-order chapters via drag&drop, export now exports them in the correct (new) order :)
  • Now defaults Save directory to your Documents directory; if you save/open from somewhere else, should save and use that as your default
  • Changed word-count graph to a bar; makes more sense than a line, since each point is discrete
  • Made the registration entry more robust; hopefully cuts back on the number of times you have to try to copy/paste your name & key ;)

Thanks for using Storyblue, I hope you continue to enjoy it!

I’ve been super-busy lately with some client development work, but I’m working on some big Storyblue improvements that I think will really make Storyblue awesomer (is that a word?). I’ll try to post some teaser mockups of the interface enhancements as they get closer. Oh, the suspense.

I’ve also gotten some great feature feedback from some of you; rest assured I’m considering all, and hopefully will have some cool stuff to show soon! I also want to enhance the export features, and add some common file formats. Hopefully soon. :)

Storyblue status!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

I went with my wife to Charleston, SC last week, on an anniversary trip. We also wanted to go somewhere together before our first baby arrives in October, so it doubled as a babymoon :). It was lovely. Nice weather, relaxed, hung out together, walked around a lot, and read books. These are a few of our favorite things.

Yesterday, I upgraded my development software to the next major version (Flex Builder 3 to Flash Builder 4). I’m hoping for thousands of magical performance and beauty increases.

Goals & charts are almost done (famouslastwords); My philosophy is to release these new features quickly and iterate to make them better (with your welcome feedback). So as soon as the basic word-charts and goals are in and tested, I’ll push out a new version. Then I’ll go back and make them better.

If I try to make the feature perfect and complete right off the bat, it’ll be 2 years before you see it, and it won’t be what you want anyway. That’s one of the beautiful things about being a sole developer: I can write, rewrite, release a lot faster than a large company that has such things as “meetings” and “approvals” :).

I’m in a testing and tweaking phase now, and I refuse to let myself tweak too much before letting you guys see it, so be on the lookout for goals and charts soon!

Next version preview & status: Goals and Graphs

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

I’m working hard on the goals and graphs portion of Storyblue that’s coming in the next update. This is looking awesome, folks. The current design lets you easily add either daily/weekly word goals, or total-words-in-time-period goals.

So for instance, if your goal is to write 2000 words a day, you can set that up as  a daily word goal. Storyblue keeps track of your daily output, and graphs your daily progress against your goal, so you can see where you fell short. You can look at graphs for the last week, last month, last year, or all time, and see how you’ve done.

The other type of goal is for something like NaNoWriMo, where you know how many words you need in a set time period. Just type in your goal (e.g. 50,000 words) and your target date (Nov. 30), and Storyblue will calculate how many you need per day, and let you know if you’re on track for success.

These changes should be in the next release, sometime in the next two weeks.

I’ll post some screenshots soon!

Let me know what you think, and if you have any ideas for this feature that would help you out.
