Storyblue 1.2: RTF export extravaganza!

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Yup, Storyblue 1.2 has been released. Now exports to RTF and sports a more streamlined toolbar.

I tried to simplify the text editing toolbar a bit in this release; In fiction projects, I don’t see a need for coloring text, or bullets, or alignment. I’ve removed those features for the time being. I’ve also simplified the text sizing to be one of 3 options (small, medium, large), and apply to the whole text area (vs. the selected text). I don’t want to have any useless features, and these seem extraneous to the business of writing novels. I’m looking at font selection as well, but for now that’s still there and functioning the same. Bold/italic/underline are still there as well.

Let me know if you see any problems, either with RTF export or with the new toolbar. Do you have any thoughts about the toolbar changes? Let me know — taylor@manythingsblue.com.

Storyblue 1.1.4

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Oh so quickly, this release: In short, copy/paste Mac? Not actually fixed in 1.1.3. In long? I hope this is the end, and whyohwhy Adobe AIR do you not have something which handles this automatically, as much as you imply you have such?

Anyway, back to work! :)

Storyblue 1.1.3 released!

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Huzzah! Just released Storyblue v1.1.3 with the following awesome features:

  • Auto-save! Now Storyblue will auto-save your story by default every 5 minutes. You can turn this off under the (new) Edit menu >> Auto-save.
  • Copy/paste on Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6! One of these strange & annoying bugs, copy/paste stopped working on newer Macs. Why, we may never know, but now there is a fancy new Edit menu with all your favorite copy/paste/select commands right there at your fingertips. Let me know, new-Mac-users, if this still doesn’t work. My Mac is old, so I rely on friendly external testers.
  • Undo! You can now Undo stuff, just like you should be able to. Well, mostly — undoing styles in the Writing editor is quirky. Better than nothing, I say!
  • Interface! I always mess with the interface, so here’s some more. Tried to tighten it up, get into more of a column feel than a row feel. I like it better.

That’s all, folks. You can install the new version from http://storyblue.com/download.shtml. Let me know if you see any errors or problems!

(Sorry for the release delay, too — consulting gigs are taking up quite a bit of time. Look for more, meatier updates on the horizon!)

Storyblue v1.1.2 Released

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Hi all,

I’ve just uploaded the latest Storyblue version, 1.1.2, with some minor fixes/enhancements. You can download it or upgrade from here.

Changes:

  • FIXED: If you re-order chapters via drag&drop, export now exports them in the correct (new) order :)
  • Now defaults Save directory to your Documents directory; if you save/open from somewhere else, should save and use that as your default
  • Changed word-count graph to a bar; makes more sense than a line, since each point is discrete
  • Made the registration entry more robust; hopefully cuts back on the number of times you have to try to copy/paste your name & key ;)

Thanks for using Storyblue, I hope you continue to enjoy it!

I’ve been super-busy lately with some client development work, but I’m working on some big Storyblue improvements that I think will really make Storyblue awesomer (is that a word?). I’ll try to post some teaser mockups of the interface enhancements as they get closer. Oh, the suspense.

I’ve also gotten some great feature feedback from some of you; rest assured I’m considering all, and hopefully will have some cool stuff to show soon! I also want to enhance the export features, and add some common file formats. Hopefully soon. :)

Storyblue 1.1.1: Fixed auto-updater!

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I’ve (hopefully) fixed the auto-updater, which doesn’t seem to work for most people. Of course, that being the case, you won’t be able to auto-update to this version. ::frown::

You can instead download it from here: http://storyblue.com/download.shtml

I fixed it by taking it out, and replacing it with something that checks to see if there’s a new version, then simply directs you to the download page, instead of trying to auto-magically install the new over top of your old version. This also, actually, removes the strange behavior wherein the updater would just shut down the app with no warning before updating. Hurrah for slaying multiple birds with a single stone!

Let me know if you see any issues!

Storyblue: Goals & Charts released!

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Goals and charts are now available in the new Storyblue 1.1 release!

Get the update now from the Download page — free for registered users!

Have you ever done NaNoWriMo? (If not, it’s the world-wide phenomenon in which thousands of people attempt to write 50,000 words in November.) If so, you know how motivating it is to see that word count bar creep up slowly, day by day, until it hits 50,000 (or doesn’t, in which case it turns demotivating).

We here at the airy and beautiful mountain offices of manythingsblue have taken inspiration and creative spark from that knowledge, and said to ourselves: “Seeing progress is motivating! Having a goal is motivating! How can we use this in our spiffy writing software, Storyblue?”

So we added goals and charts. Goals let you say things like, “I want to write 1250 words per day”, or “I want to write 65,000 words by November 12th“. Storyblue tracks how many words you write every day, and shows you pretty graphs of your daily word count, and how you’re doing against your goal. It’s pretty awesome. And hey, you can try it for free: Download Storyblue here, then come back and buy the full, unlocked version. Enjoy!

I of course could not resist the urge to fiddle with the interface a bit, but the major update is adding the goals and charts. I simplified it a bit from my original idea, and I have more I want to add, so let me know if you have any ideas or things you want to see! I’m open for suggestions.

The charts will track your daily word-count from now on; I wasn’t capturing it before, so if you’ve already started writing, Storyblue can’t go back and fill in those days.

Thanks for using Storyblue, and I hope you like the new features!

Storyblue updated to v1.0.2!

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Yep, another release. This one’s also minor; we changed some styling of the writing interface, to look more writerly (we think), fixed a bug with the Recent Projects window from last time, and some other minor things.

You can download/update your copy from here!

Next update will be bigger: Goals and charts! These will be awesome, and awesomely motivating.
